Grind With A Purpose

Eldar Tactics

Gone are the 4th edition days of fielding two minimal Guardian jetbike squads. A general with sound Eldar Tactics knows troops are vitally important under the new 5th edition rule set. For a typical 1500 point game, I believe three or four units of troops is the optimal choice. You could of course take minimal troops and go for the automatic 'wipe out' win. Here's a brief outline of the Eldar Troop Tactics I use.

Dire Avengers:

Dire Avengers are the unit of choice for most Eldar armies in fifth edition. They fit in with all types of Eldar Tactics, as they function well on foot and in transports. Dire Avengers are a fantastic close range unit, pumping out a high volume of very accurate firepower. GEQs crumble to massed Dire Avenger firepower. Against MEQ's it likely you'll need to tie the shooting in with a successful Doom. Dire Avengers are best fielded in units of 10, this raises there ranged effectiveness and gives you a greater chance of holding up the enemy during assaults. Precision strikes are the key to successful Dire Avenger Tactics. Get into position as quickly as possible strike fast, strike hard.

Defender Guardians:

Eldar tacticians tend to fall into two trains of thought regarding Guardians - those that love them and those that loath them. Guardians have access to a move and fire heavy weapon, making them useful in support of assault units blasting Shurikan Cannon or Scatter Laser, or sitting back on the gun-line sniping vehicles with Brightlances or Eldar Missile Launchers. This opens up a whole host of varying Eldar Tactics.

Storm Guardians:

Regular Guardians are the close assault Guardians of the Eldar list. They must get up close and personal to be effective and make an ideal support unit when used in conjunction with an Avatar or specialist assault Aspect Warriors. Do not expect them to win you the game alone! Their lack of grenades of any kind is a huge tactical weakness. Flamers are very useful if you are going up against GEQs. Fusion Guns can be useful for killing MEQ's or knocking a tank out, but I wouldn't rely on it. The Eldar list has better options for Marine and vehicle hunting. The Warlock is an essential upgrade for Storm Guardians. He gives them additional close combat bite and an extremely useful psychic ability. Destructor, Enhance, Embolden or to a lesser extent conceal.

Guardian Jetbikes:

Guardian jetbikes are excellent fast moving objective claimers under the 5th edition rule set. They have a solid rate of fire provided by their 1 in 3 Shurikan Cannon ratio and benefit from moving in the assault phase for hit and run style attacks. In spite of their obvious advantages Jetbikes are very fragile and will be picked off if left in the open. Tactically I find them best as a mobile reserve or wide out on the flanks harassing the edge of the enemies force where their low range and assault phase movement can best be utilised.

Rangers/Pathfinders:

Rangers, who can be upgraded to Pathfinders make for excellent objective holders. I rarely leave home without a unit. They're weak in assault though so it's a sound tactic to keep a counter assault unit nearby to help defend or deter assault units. They specialise in taking down high toughness models from afar, so if you are up against Tyranids, you'll find these guys extremely effective. Pinning is another benefit of the sniper rifle. Don't rely on it heavily though, a large portion of the units you encounter on the battlefield have high leadership. Whether or not to upgrade to Pathfinders is a difficult decision, I personally think the upgrade is worth it. The additional AP1 chance and additional cover save means you only have to kill one or two more marines or pass an extra save to make make your points back.

The EU and NA Aion fans are concerned about how NCSoft will manage the botting issue with this game. Honestly I am concerned about this too. It took them about a couple of years to seriously take into consideration this problem and REALLY do something about it. I just hope that if they'll treat this matter from the beginning things won't get bad.

Ayase (Aion community coordinator) assured the fans that they will do anything they can in order to prevent botting in Aion from the beginning. Bots and gold sellers/buyers are a serious problem in MMO games, and most of you guys know it from your own experience. NCSoft didn't even made public the punishments for using 3rd party software that automates gameplay(a.k.a. bots), something like IP Ban or even better MAC Adress ban because this one is harder to change in case you get banned, but the best would be to ban their game account with no refunds.

NCSoft does not have a specialized team of developers whose purpose would be to ensure the client/server security issues and bot/hack prevention. The main game developers will be the ones will be doing game development and securing the client/server against bots/hacking. Too many things on their hands if you ask me, and this may result in poor client/server security or poor game development or the worst case scenario, both game development and security issues.

I just hope they learned from mistakes they did in the past (with L2), and won't allow bot trains to dominate the servers once more.

Racing Simulators - Why Are They Never Just Right?

Every once in a while a daring company decided to make a video game simulating some sort of activity. This is often a risk because you can expect only that small crowd that loves that sport enough to actually want to go out a video game based on it. So that when they go home tired from doing that same activity, they can keep playing it on their favorite console or PC. Racing games is one these categories, although more often confused a racing simulator is not the same a racing arcade game.

There difference being mostly the difficulty curve. A racing simulator is not a game you can simply jump onto and go. At least not without some serious prior knowledge of cars and how to drive a proper race car. The way a car handles in say "Cruisin' USA" is not the same way a car will handle in "GTR-2" because GTR-2 is racing simulator so if you try to take that corner while you slam on the brakes expect to lock your wheels and slam onto the wall. That's not to say racing simulators are without flaws. I have yet to come by a "perfect" racing simulator, there is always something wrong with them. The best one by far in my opinion is GTR-2 but even then, the collision and damage physics are simply too forgiving.

Too many times have I crashed onto another car doing well over 100mph only to see them receive a small dent and only once did I crash onto a wall and my car caught fire and that was only because I was going over 270mph. Other games such as Gran Turismo and Forza Motosport 1 & 2 are great, but border on the the Arcade category as by default they are extremely easy to play. That's not to say you can't go into the menu screen and kick up the difficulty by turning off ABS, TCS & STM but even then Gran Turismo offers no damage physics so there goes that and Forza has a dumb AI so there is no challenge to be had. The latest Gran Turismo looks promising and I am almost done installing GTR-Evolution. The latest followup release to the GTR series which looks very promising. Classic Gaming - Kaboom! The Quest For 10,000 Points

One of my fondest video game memories is the Activision classic Kaboom! for the Atari 2600. Back in the days when the simple appeal of repetitive, score driven gaming could hold your interest for hours on end this was the top shelf for a pre-teen like myself.

Current younger gamers may have some exposure to the game either through various Activision collections on current or recent gen consoles or through Atari 2600 emulators but there is a major difference between these versions and the original. That would be the controls.

Back in the Atari 2600 days there were various controllers for the system and each game required that you use the proper ones. The vast majority used either the tried and true joystick controller or the Atari Paddle controllers. With today's generation of consoles there's no acceptable approximation for the paddle controller. A simple box with a round spinning wheel that gave you "stop-on-a-dime" precision for games that required them. The nearest you could get to the experience today would be an arcade trackball. Kaboom! was the ultimate paddle controller game. It was the one that wore them out.

It was a simple concept. There was a villain on top of a wall dropping bombs and you were a stack of water buckets at the bottom of the wall. You had to catch the bombs as they were dropped. If you missed one: KABOOM! You started with three buckets stacked and every time you missed a bomb you would lose a bucket. When you missed three total the game was over.

My older brother and I would literally spend hours on this game every night. The instruction manual (a rather hefty one for such a simple game) spoke of a special event that we were obsessed with unlocking.

If you were able to reach the incredible score of 10,000 points the villain, in his acknowledgement of your incredible achievement, would honor you with some mysterious gesture.

My brother and I pounded this game for a long time to get there. Back then, there was no internet, so you couldn't buy the game, run home and hop on line to find out every piece of information you needed or wanted about it. Your gaming "community" was the other kids in your fifth grade class who also had an Atari or who became your sworn enemy because they had the Intellivision console. My older brother was in his 20s, so his gaming community back then was his old high school buddies he still got high with.

Kaboom! gameplay became an art form. There were eight levels. With each advancing level the villain would sweep back and forth across the wall stripping the bombs with greater speed.

Like any repetition-based game you could boil down the first 5 or 6 levels to an art form only missing when you became too complacent. Levels 7 and 8 were the wild cards. To get to 10,000 you would have to cycle through all 8 levels and continue at the crazy-paced level 8 over and over again until you lost. The last two levels were so fast and chaotic that it was nearly impossible to nail down a pattern that gave you a continued 90 plus percent success rate.

There were lots of tricks. Every thousand points, you would get an extra bucket if you were down to less than three. Every time you missed a bomb, the game would revert back and start you at the speed of the previous level. The perfect strategy if you had all three buckets was to deliberately miss the last bomb that would put you over the next 1000 point bonus so you could go back and rack up all the points you could by repeating the previous level knowing that you'd pick that third bucket back up with the first bomb catch of the next wave at a slower speed.

On the odd numbered levels, the villain would strip the bombs close together back and forth across the wall in a pretty simple pattern. On the even levels, he would spread the bomb drops farther apart and throw in an occasional erratic move at the right side of the wall.

The paddle controllers, while precise, also did show a little drag. One of the controllers was just a little better than the other and my brother and I would always have to call dibbs on the "good" one. One of them had a little bit of a jerkier motion while moving your buckets across the screen. In certain spots you could take your fingers off and the buckets would twitch. Sometimes you would hit that spot at a bad moment and even though the effect was minimal it could cause your buckets to twitch away from where you needed to be causing you to miss.

All of these factors were part of our intense study of the game. And for a short period of time it was big part of our night-life. I don't know how many hours, days, weeks, months my brother and I put into the game, but we began to take on a rather defeatist attitude about it after a while with talk like "it's impossible. The 10,000 point barrier can't be reached."

We had spent so much time speculating on what the hell the mystical 10,000 point reward could be that we had built it up to being just about anything up to and including the game cartridge jumping out of the console and giving you hand job on the spot. The smart money was on my brother's speculation that the villain would "tip his hat" to you. Hey, with Atari 2600 graphics a hat tip was a pretty reasonable expectation!

It all came to a head one night. I was pounding through level 8 over and over again approaching 10,000. Finally, I was down to my last water bucket. Almost there! Almost. And then, at 9,998 points, I missed the next bomb. Game Over.

That was the bubble burster and we both pretty much lost our taste for the game. We had both had enough.

We played Atari after that, but Kaboom! was just an occasional joke and we moved on with our gaming lives. This would have been about around 1983.

The story picks up about 12 years later in the mid 1990s. My brother was married and had two kids by this time. I was married but didn't have either of my sons yet. I was unpacking some old junk in my modest apartment and came across my old Atari 2600. It still worked fine, but the TV/GAME converter box didn't work, so I literally took the metal end of the cord that went into the switch box and duct taped it to the metal TV antenna and tuned the TV to channel 3. Don't laugh folks, that worked like a charm back in the channel 3 days of non-cable ready TVs. Crystal clear pic as long as you didn't bump it.

Anyway. Older. Married. College Degree. Full Time Job. It was time revisit Kaboom!

All the time spent on it when I was younger. Man, no way I was going to whip my skills back into shape, but it was worth a shot.

It took about 90 minutes. I don't know what changed all those years later. Night after night. Week after week. Neither me nor my brother could break that 10,000 barrier. Then, without touching it for a dozen years, I played for 90 minutes and hit it.

Now before I finish this story, let me say that if you play this game in one of these collections it's just not the same with a keyboard, XBOX controller or on a Gameboy. It's JUST NOT THE SAME without the paddle controllers.

In any case, at 10,000 points the villain smiles briefly. Normally, he had a simple "V" on his face that was his mouth frowning. At 10,000, the "V" frown turns upside down into a smile.

What a crock of shit.

And then I have another friend who is pretty tall and have a few pounds of fat on his body. He lands on 23 on the BMI scale and therefore is believed to be in perfect shape. But you can easily tell that there is a big difference in health between the two.

For example, at the gym were I used to workout there was a type of machine that could measure your body composition. It would tell you both the percent and the actual weight of: fat, water, muscles, and bones. It did this by sending a small electrical current through your body. It was very useful, because you knew exactly what you needed to work on.

Personally I would save my money and buy a 4 month subscription to my local gym. The benefits are many. If you are thinking of leaving the warmer climates of Azeroth for the frozen lands of Northrend, you'll have to make sure that your bags have plenty of gold, for it turns out that battling the Scourge is an expensive business in the land of snow and ice.

And it matters not if you bought your epic flying mount in the Burning Crusade, you'll still have to level to 77 and then fork out 1000g for Cold Weather Flying before you can gain the freedom of the frigid Northrend skies. So it will help if you hone up on your gold making skills early on in the game so that you'll have enough to at least pay your bar bill at Valliance Keep.

Learning how to make gold in WOTLK is not that hard or different from the gold making strategies in other major zones of the game. You just have to know what players are looking for in terms of basic crafting materials and make sure you ship a steady supply to the Auction House.

If you have one of the primary gathering professions (Mining, Herbalism or Skinning), then you'll be in a good position to farm these materials during the course of your questing and make a ton of gold. This assumes that you have at least reached a profession skill of 350 and have been trained to Grand Master level. Trainers can be found in the two starter areas of Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord.

If you are still a little way off your profession skill level, you can still gather Frostweave Cloth from the many humanoids of Northrend and Meat from the large selection of animals that roam there. Meat and Cloth are still good gold making strategies at this stage in the game and often overlooked as a good income source by many players.

But as I've mentioned in my Gold Making Guide (see below) it helps if you combine questing with grinding and gathering. You'll not only level faster but make enough gold in the process to ensure a down payment on that Woolly Mammoth you've had your eye on in the Dalaran market place.

As an example, I found myself in Kamagua - the island connected to the Howling Fjord by the Ancient Lift. There I picked up the quest 'Feeding the Survivors' from Elder Atuik of the Tuskarr. The quest calls for the gathering of 6 Island Shoveltusk Meat from the surrounding Shoveltusks (don't leave the island). These are also being attacked by wolves. In the course of the quest you'll end up killing many Shoveltusks and the attacking Wolves.

The quest is very easy and you don't have to travel far from the quest giver. In the course of completing the quest, you'll also end up with a stack of Shoveltusk Flank in addition to some Worg Haunch. These sells very well on my server (but check your server for pricing) and are in demand from players wanting to level their cooking and complete cooking quests. As a bonus to the XP's that you'll get from the quest and kills, you'll earn reputation with the The Kalu'ak.

Call of Duty 5 - World at War Review

With CoD4 being one of the most impressive and ground breaking releases in terms of photo realistic graphics, game play to die for and a storyline that was so involving it made you want run down to your local recruitment office and sign up! Cod5 had a very tough act to follow, but surely with a team that could put out a title like Cod4 they shouldn't have a problem right?

As soon as I heard they were returning the WWII and the Pacific Theater era I cried a little inside as these scenarios has been covered by more than enough titles, game developers out there; 'The world has moved on, can't you?' Still I was definitely going to get this game no matter what due to Cod4 being so good, I think many people felt this way, and I also think Activision used this fact to their advantage.

So the game...sticking with the same graphics engine as Cod4 (sorry I'll try to stop mentioning it as this isn't a comparison), the visuals are stunning and jungle landscapes really make the game a dream to look at. One of the best things about this engine is just how well it runs on lower end systems. To test this I played it on an AMDx2 4600 at 2.8GHz, 2 gig's of ddr2 ram and a 7800GTX extreme with resolution at 1280x1024 and was getting an average of 50fps with settings on high.

Now this isn't very impressive compared to what can be achieved with newer hardware, however 50fps will give you great game play and considering you can build a system as specified above for ~£150 (excluding monitor and peripherals etc) you can see just how well they have done with this engine.

The campaign is split into two sections, you swap between playing as Private Miller of the U.S. Marine Corps fighting the Japanese Army in the Pacific, and Private Dimitri Petrenko of the Red Army advancing on Berlin. (have I seen this format somewhere before?).

As expected the playability of the game is outstanding, the combat really gets your heart pounding and the games AI really adds a sense of realism that I find lacking in a lot of FPS games. Your buddies will help you out but the pace of each battle really depends on how aggressive you're feeling. This makes for a game that is different each time you play through it as the scenario reacts to your game play style.

The multiplayer is the same format as CoD4 (damn!) giving each player a ranking so you have targets to achieve and the fast paced action will keep you online for days.

And to be honest that's all I have to say about this release because if you've played CoD4 (and who hasn't) you've seen it all before really. Don't get me wrong it is a GREAT game, I enjoyed playing it thoroughly and would recommend it to all as it would turn any WoW addict into an FPS fan. However I still feel a bit let down. It seems as if Activision have made a breakthrough with CoD4, then rather than pushing the boundary further and keeping the gaming community on the edge of their seats, they themselves have sat back and played it safe to get the benjamins rolling in.

They have built a sense trust with their name as one would expect nothing but the best from them now, I pray that they will not abuse this trust that we as consumers have put in them. I hope they will use the profit from this release to good use and get back on the edge of their seats, as we all know what they are capable of when they put their mind to it. It's time to make another giant leap for mankind guys!

Unlike in the movie, however, you cannot escape the arena via a 'hole-in-the wall'. You must battle it out within the same confine right to the end of the round; that is, until either all the program controlled cycles or your cycle has crashed.

All cycles have a default starting speed, whether continuing strait ahead or turning, although this is slightly higher or faster for the 'bots' than for the one you command. Some dispute this, arguing that the default speeds are the same for all cycles, although I am convinced after some years of playing GLtron, that the former is true. I could be wrong... This situation changes, should you come within attack-range of the bots, that will suddenly accelerate as they attempt to cut you off or box you in, in an effort to force you to crash, but it is not entirely one-sided.

The program has various options that you can select from, including a 'booster' command for which you can assign any key on the keyboard. Pressing this key at any time during the round, will enable your cycle to go much faster than any of the bot cycles, which should enable you to even the odds if your overall strategy is sound, however, it takes a few moments for the booster-phase to reach maximum, and the duration is not that long. After a short while, it doesn't matter how much you press the assigned key, your light-cycle will not accelerate any further beyond the default speed. Simply wait a short while, and then you can use the booster again. It is down to you and your timing, as to when you should use it. The bot cycles can of course accelerate when ever they want...

Left and Right control is via the left and right arrow-keys, and there are other game options that you can select in addition to the 'booster' command. Arena size options range from SMALL to EXTREME, and the default or starting speed options range from SLOW to CRAZY. There is also a 'glance sideways' command that you can assign any key to, that as it suggest, enables you to look to your left or right so that you can see whether or not bot cycles are closing in on you. By default, you only have one view, which is strait ahead. The various game-modes are COCKPIT view; MOUSE; CIRCLING and BEHIND. The 'glance sideways' command is really only appropriate for when playing in cockpit view, which can be either very thrilling or very nerve wracking, depending on your disposition; especially if the speed setting is set to CRAZY, but in my own experience, using the 'glance sideways' command is more of a hazard then a benefit.

Pressing the left and right arrow-keys for turning, and say the Ctrl-key for the 'booster', plus an additional key for glancing sideways, all within split-seconds of each other, is much easier said then done. You can also decide whether you wish to have dreaded 'recognizers' in the game, which look just like those in the movie. In GLtron, they will not come down on top of you and crush you, like in the movie, but they will constantly buzz you overhead casting distracting dark shadows, usually, just as you are about to avoid a bot cycle or one of the arena walls!

Downloading GLtron is very strait forward and is easy to install. Most importantly, it is completely malware free! There are two fairly sinister occurrences that can happen whilst playing the game however, which may cause the uninitiated to think that something untoward has been downloaded with the game, but this is not the case, it is simply GLtron playing tricks on you. GLtron's version of the Master Control Program or MCP, if you like...
The coinsurances are as follows, which can happen regularly or infrequently.

1. The game will suddenly come to a halt for no apparent reason, and a pop-up message will display telling you that 'GLtron has encountered a problem and needs to close', or words to this effect, followed by 'Do you wish to send an error report Y/N ?.....', or again, words to this effect. In other words, it 'behaves' like a standard Windows (TM) error-report message, only it isn't. Again, it is simply GLtron playing tricks with you. Always respond with 'N' just in case, although I am convinced that this is not malware of any kind, it is simply GLtron's version of the MCP.

2. When playing in Cockpit-mode, the arena will suddenly shift out of perspective by a number of degrees, which can be imminently disastrous if you are just about to avoid an arena wall or a light trail.

Once again, this is GLtron's version of the MCP playing tricks with you. By slightly moving/using your mouse or pointing-device however, you can quickly rectify this. Incidentally, if you use a mouse, place it well away from the keyboard just before starting a game, as inadvertently knocking it will cause the same thing to happen. If your keyboard has a pointer-pad; usually the case for laptop's, do not inadvertently touch it for the same reasons.

The downloaded package includes various arena styles or 'artpacks' and one in-game playing recursive soundtrack called Revenge of Cats, which can be a bit monotonous after a while. Additional soundtracks and artpacks can be downloaded, and instructions for this are given on the official site, in addition to a whole host of information about the game.

GLtron will not be for everyone, but fans of the movie itself will be very happy with it. Warning! If you like this genre of computer game, GLtron can be very, very addictive.

Chess For Beginners - The Main Chess Opening Principals

Hundreds, if not thousands, of books have been written on chess openings. In chess, for beginners the natural instinct will be to buy a chess openings book and commit specific openings to memory. When the chess beginner then tries to apply a specific opening in a real chess game they usually become unstuck as their opponent makes a non-book move. It is best to learn good opening principals first this will then allow you to adapt your openings based on your opponents moves.

1. Control the Center

The first principal is to control as much of the center of the chess board as possible. The key squares are d4, d5, e4 and e5. This will occur naturally for white with most openings, the two most common opening moves being the Queens pawn move to d4 or the Kings pawn move to e4.

2. Develop your Pieces

Moving your Queens or Kings pawn first then controls either d5 or e5, it also allows room for movement for the more major pieces. Bringing in to play the second principal of developing your major pieces, starting with your Knights followed by the Bishops. You may need to move another pawn to develop your Bishops fully.

Moving your Knights to either c3 or f3 will help protect your advanced pawn and also control more of the center of the board.

3. Castle Early

You should then Castle as soon as possible, preferably on the Kings side. This helps protect your King from attack and release the Rook into the center.

4. Connect your Rooks

Once you have Castled you should then move the Queen to allow your Rooks to connect and have free movement on the back rank. Move your Queen with caution though, as another principal in the opening is not to over expose your Queen.

5. Build a Solid Structure

Do not be tempted to attack until your pieces have been developed. Your aim in the chess opening is to build a solid structure from which you can then attack your opponent. By following these principals your chess pieces will have more freedom of movement and be less vulnerable to attack.

Once your are comfortable with these ideas you can then learn a chess opening or two and if your opponent does not follow the book moves you can fall back on these principals as a what to do next.

A chess opening I would recommend would be the Scotch Game ECO C44. This is a simple chess opening that leads to an open game. It derives it's name from a correspondence chess match between Edinburgh and London in 1824. Though not as popular in the modern chess game it is used by chess Grandmasters as a surprise alternative to more common modern chess openings.

Coming in for her job at night, the museum's caretaker suddenly found all of the exhibits trashed and scattered all over the place. It's evident that some robbers had found themselves inside the museum and it seems too that they are still inside hauling stuff. There's no time to tell the police about it, so she has to take matters into her own hands, and accompanying her will be her trusty talking dog, Artie, and you of course, as you all try to restore all of the exhibits while catching burglars in the process.

As a hidden object game, Pictureka Museum Mayhem involves unique gameplay mechanics where instead of finding listed items, you are given cards bearing item categories and a number of such items you need collecting. For each card you clear, you gain points and Artie gains a step closer into catching a burglar. Cards are also color-coded, with the red cards having the most points, therefore you can focus more on clearing the high-pointed cards to finish the level faster and within the time limit.

Clearing same-colored cards in succession means earning multiplier points for the cards you clear. Points are gathered inside the museum vault, but a burglar may break in the vault too, stealing money in a consistent basis. By this time, cards will turn into gold, and clearing gold cards will shoo the burglar away from your hard-earned money. Anyway, after finishing each level, it's time for a celebration as our heroine unravels a restored museum exhibit showing wacky art forms coming from their world's fictional past.

Problems Playing Tiger Woods 09 PGA Tour Left Handed

When I started playing Tiger Woods 09 All Play I was very excited from the beginning. I had been playing Wii golf and liked it. It did get kind of boring playing the same course over and over again. Then I got the Tiger Woods Game. I read many reviews on the game and the biggest complaint I found was the way the putting worked. I thought I could live with that and decided to play the game.

I created my own character, choose my clubs and took the training course. The training went fine however when I got on the course and made the first green I could not put. Now this is the number one complaint on all the review sites. My problem seemed different. When I pulled back on the controller to initiate the putt the meter would erratically move up and down making it impossible to putt. After hours of frustrating play over two days I wanted to return the game. I thought about it for a while and then I tried to put right handed. It worked! Even though my character lined up left handed and hit just fine on the tee, in the fairway and lined up left handed on the green the game thought I was right handed on the green.

While I was in the fairway I pushed the + key and looked at the options. Sure enough it showed me as right handed. I changed to left handed and everything worked great. I had to do this until I started the Tiger Challenge. For some reason once I started the challenges it kept me as left handed.

The same thing happened to a friend of mine that came over to play. He still has to select left handed when we play.

The second problem is in the club tuner. I wanted to tune my clubs and went to the club tuner. I was slicing a little and selected the fix recommended by Tigers Coach. I started slicing more and more. Although I was playing left handed, the slice and fade were reversed. The club tuner is set for right handed play. That left out the automatic fix for left handed players. So I had to figure out what effect each tweak had on my swing.

Finding the solution to the putting bug saved me from returning the game. I did not find this fix on any of the website reviews. The putting is still not the best however it's still a great game, even for left-handers.

If you have made it to the frozen lands of Northrend in the latest expansion of Wrath of the Lich king, you have probably noticed that life battling the Scourge can be a little on the expensive side. Everything, it would seem, cost quite a bit of gold, compared to other zones. So it's a good idea to review some of the fundamentals of gold farming in wotlk.

Making gold in Wrath of the Lich King follows the same principles as other parts of the game except that buying and trading to make gold now take place on a more epic scale with new and exotic materials harvested from the frigid snows of Northrend. Players will want to buy and trade these new materials, just like in other parts of the game. Folks will be gathering and crafting as before and all this material will end up in Auction House where canny players in the know will look to turn a profit.

Level Your Professions

If you have one of the primary gathering professions (Mining, Skinning, Herbalism) and can be a net supplier of basic Northrend mats, then you'll make a ton of gold in wotlk, providing you have leveled your profession to that of Grand Master. To train to this level you'll need to visit one of the Grand Master trainers that can be found in one of the first landing zones of Northrend - Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord.

You'll need to have reached at least level 350 in any of the above professions before training can begin. Below this level, you won't be able to loot any of the new ores, herbs or fauna in Northrend. Lower level mats, as found in Azeroth and Outlands, are not to be found here.

Gather Cloth

In the course of your travels through Northrend, you'll encounter many types of humanoid, many of whom can be looted for cloth. The new cloth in Northrend is Frostweave and is in great demand for First Aid and many of the crafts at Grand Master level. A stack of Frostweave cloth will earn you much gold in the Auction House.

Unlike the professions, the gathering of cloth requires no experience and can be achieved at any character level, providing you survive the encounter. Tailors have an advantage, though, via their ability to scavenge, which gives them a better chance to loot additional cloth.

Skinning For Profit

The one thing that will strike you when you first enter Northrend is the large number of game animals available for skinning and looting. Zones abundant in game are the Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord and Grizzly Hills. Skinning will make you a ton of gold by providing Borean Leather and Artic Fur.

If you are not a skinner, then looting game will provide you will some of the new meats in much demand by the cooks of Northrend. Be sure to collect Chilled Meat and Chunk o' Mammoth early on in the game to turn a quick profit.

You have eight classes to choose from when you are playing World of Warcraft but how are you going to decide which class that you want to create a character? Of course, each class has its own benefits and disadvantages and you will have to understand each and every one of it before you decide, if possible.

So, the classes available are rogues, warriors, warlocks, hunters, shamans, paladins, priests and mages. Rogues is possibly the best class for some players. The reason is because Rogues kill mob faster than any other classes. As such, you get to level faster.

Warriors would be the best tanks and if you want some adventure, pick this class. Warriors are great in PvP especially if you are a caster. However, they normally kill real slow especially when you are at low levels. So, to kill faster, you will need to level your character to higher levels.

Normally, first character would be a Hunter. Hunters have companion (i.e. pet) and so they hardly die unless if they are being ganked. If you hate dull character, do not pick Hunter as your character class. Personally, I do feel that Hunter is too dull compared to other character classes.

Warlocks are also great for characters because you get pets at different levels. Warlocks are much fun compared to Hunter and kill faster too. They have better DPS pets at different levels so look out for the pets you can get if you pick Warlocks.

Shamans get great DPS class at higher levels. Other than that, Shamans are also great for PvP or PvE. Although you will find that Shamans level slowly and kill rather slow as well but they can heal based on their talent build. This is their specialty.

Being priests, you level slow but there is nothing to be disappointed about after all you need priests to heal everyone in intances. Priests leveling is easy but killing will take a long time. Still, you can cast many healing spells even when you are fighting.

Now that you have known the properties of each character classes, it is time to make your pick based on your interests and goal in playing World of Warcraft.

Paladins are great in almost everything. They are also being feared by most of the other classes. However, if you are a Paladin, you can AoE and stay alive to tell the story. You can DPS and tank while healing at the same time. Paladins are simply powerful in every way.

Tips for leveling fast:

1. Get some addons. The best place to find them is Curse (dot) com. There you can find class specific mods for different professions etc.

2. For professions it is best to pick up Mining and skinning. Therefore, you can have money to buy your mount when you hit the required level. Depending on your class mining can be difficult to level. Then go for herbalism/ skinning. Just make sure you have your mount when you hit the required level. It will help you a lot with leveling.

3. When you hit 15/25/35/45 etc. get the best water/food and the best weapon you can have. It will improve your downtime really a lot.

4. It's really important to know what you are going to do next. If you had run the half way to a quest and then realize that you can pick up another quest that can be done at the same place you will have to run back, and this will really slow you down.

5. ALWAYS have an alt at the AH. Send to him the stuff you want to sell or items that you can't wear till later. That will save you a lot of time/money.

6. Always loot mobs after level 20, because you can never know when a blue or purple item drops. Moreover, if you are lucky with these you can have your first mount and money +.

7. When you log of always try to be at an Inn. It will help you really a lot with leveling.

8. Don't do instances till level 60.The reason is that they are really slow and will most probably will level even slower. Even if you get a pro group.

9. If that is you first time, leveling character to 60 or you want to level up really fast don't play on a PVP server. This can really slow you down a lot.

10. You don't have to run back to town when your bags are full. Just destroy the low price items.

11. In high levels always, wear one type of weapon, or two if you dual. For example- I use swords trough the entire game but I want to get a dagger just because it will unlock me some good skills - this will hurt my game more than it helps. Because I will need a lot of time leveling the dagger, especially if I am high level.

12. Always use hotkeys. Always. This not will make you good in leveling but you will get a lot better in PVP as well.

Improving your boffing skills is sometimes easier than you think! There is the old adage of practice, practice, and more practice. But one week I learned more than I thought I ever would, standing outside of the boffer circle. It was an experience that I did not expect and will not soon forget. Due to an injury (which had nothing to do with boffing) I was unable to participate in the battle, but had committed to bringing weapons. So I thought I would just go and watch. And it was interesting what you can see without a boffer in your hand.

You saw people who consistently fought as a team. And no, they weren't a couple as you would expect. Rather they were a pair that just seemed to continually gravitate to the same area for some reason. And even though it was cut throat (every one for themselves) they ended up back to back, fighting off the rest of the group on a regular basis.

I saw strategies I never noticed before coming through again and again. I watched people pull their punches for people smaller than themselves and I also saw people who preyed on peoples weakness and inexperience to make themselves big and powerful in their own minds.

I caught sight of one tall man who was making an effort not to deliver head shots, try again and again to lower his arms to battle as most peoples head were straight out from his arm and he felt most comfortable extending his arm to his full reach with his sword so as to avoid taking shots. I expect him to continue to keep practicing as I have received some of those (fatal for the one who delivers the head shot) shots and think he will not be so upset if he is not losing his own head so much.

I noticed a women who fought while crouched with her buckler shield, sword and her strategy of making herself small and therefore much harder to hit. She would take on the biggest of the warriors and still be left at the end. It didn't hurt that she had perfected this move and was able to "duck walk" as easily as breathing.

I noticed the safety factor that I hadn't realized was so important as when I saw someone's two year old wander on to the battlefield and some one yelled "Hold". The reaction time and the rapid response was impressive as the noise was deafening before we noticed the small one, but with that one word (and I still can't figure out how anyone heard it) all battle ceased, and the small one was escorted off the battlefield with a promise that his time would yet come.

I saw the defeated faces of people leaving the battlefield with their weapon laying across their head to signify they were "dead" for the moment, heading to the corner to count themselves back to life with a grin and a plan to live longer the next time.

It was time well spent for the newbie who was thrilled to be picking up tips for these foam weapons called boffers from the more experienced and then be able to use them on the same person who explained it to them.

I could hear the grunts and groans of warriors, that let you know they took a hit and I could also hear the victorious whooping of someone going for a kill.

I noticed how there were young and old, tall and short, some with money to spend on foam weapons and people who came with no weapons and had to borrow a soft sword to get into the battle, go out onto a battlefield as an equal and sometimes win, sometimes lose, but stay until they were forced to go home.

I saw where the person who was supposed to be a leader, react cowardly and run more often than fight and never admit when he did take a hit. I will make sure next time we battle that he knows he has taken a hit.

So I have come to the conclusion that an injury can be no fun when it happens or in the time it takes to get over it. But that time can be well spent practicing your boffer skills without a boffer in hand.

This holiday season I received the Wii Fit software game. Now I have purchased several Wii games in the past year, so Wii is not new to me. But this Wii Fit has been a very popular software program, so I was curious, what made it so popular? For those who don't know about Wii or Wii Fit, you need to get outside more often, but I'll explain. Wii is a software video system, like X-Box or PlayStation. You buy video games such as shooting games, sporting activity games, educational games etc. In recent years these gaming systems have become very sophisticated and interactive. Well back to my Wii Fit....

As we all know, exercising is not a fun activity for most people. Even though we know it is good for us, we make excuses for putting it off. I wondered what made this exercise video so compelling and then it hit me, motivation! I love when science and technology catch up with me.

I explain how to motivate and improve your work teams, using terms like enjoyable, passionate, and focused on the individual. Well, Wii Fit is using those same traits to have us workout.

First, the Wii Fit platform measures our weight, asks our age, determines our balance and starts us with beginner exercises, in other words assessing our personal traits. Next, we are given a variety of activities that determine what exercises we excel at. The exercises are thoroughly explained and we are encouraged throughout the exercises, just like a manager should do with their team. The Wii Fit measures how well we do with our balance and accuracy as we perform these exercises. My performance is ranked based on past performances, so I have an analysis of how well I'm doing. I am always striving to beat my last performance.

Wii Fit gives us a series of activities under the heading of Yoga, Strength Training, Aerobics and Games, so we don't get bored. Even the Games category is having us do fitness activities disguised as games and ranking our success. We receive recognition as we improve.

There is also a heading called Favorites where your best activities are automatically stored so you can continue to work on the exercises you are good at. This Wii Fit is motivating me to perform tasks that I didn't think I would like, in a way that is enjoyable, measurable, and using my best skills.

Are your team members given a record of how they are doing, not against someone else, who have different talents and characteristics, but ranking their successes against themselves based on how they have done in the past? Kid Games - A Parent's View

Personally I have 7 children 6 boys 1 girl, ranging from 9 to 25 and most of them are in their teens, we own every Nintendo system and nothing but. It's hard to afford even the WII, let alone find one, so we thought waiting for a year.

We could get one for them next year, so we will wait to read the gossip reviews and facts going around.

We have also loved and recommend the type of games SONY has put out for years and years, they produce a good variety. These are the sort of kid games the kids really want. Having said that, it is true that Nintendo does have fabulous games. I'll go even further Nintendo has games that we almost cannot live with out!

The classics are Zelda, Mario and the like, Shooters, and sports, and SONY undeniably has the top Kid games, of role playing, great shooters, etc. I could go on and on.

I enjoyed some unusual board games or vintage kid games which we played as a kid, but, in my opinion, none can match the shear power of enjoyment kids get now from the top computer game creators.

There is more and more use of games to put across important messages to kids. Some "keep them safe" type kid games are available that have been designed for tweens and teens. They are full blown actual computer games that take kids through the experience of being hood-winked by internet predators.

The reason that such a large investment has been put into such games is so that kids can learn to recognize the signs and avoid the real thing.

Street Fighter 4 Strategy - The Power of Small Tweaks to Your Game - Part 2

Both of today's tweaks have to do with throwing. They apply both to 3s and Street Fighter 4 so all of you guys should be able to benefit from this.

Teching throws while crouching

I see a lot of Street Fighter 4 players whiffing throws when trying to tech. Luckily for them, the penalty for whiffing throws in this game is not very high. In 3rd Strike, it's very easy to lose half of your life or more whiffing a throw if you're playing against a character like Chun Li, Urien or Yun. So because of this, they don't realize that it's a big deal to whiff throws. Sure you probably won't get killed for it, but you can definitely get hit by a lot of damage.For example, if you whiff a throw against Balrog, he can D + MP xx MP Dash Straight xx Super. Ryu could D + MK xx EX Fireball XX Ultra in the corner. Ken can D + MK xx Fireball XX Super. These are just a few examples of some majorly damaging combos that you could be setting yourself up for if you're not careful with your throws.

There is a solution though. Instead of standing up to press LP + LK to throw, you can actually press LP + MK while holding Down-Back. This is called an option select throw because what your character does is dependent on what your opponent did. Timed properly, here are the possible outcomes for an option select throw:

If they try and throw, you'll tech and get out of it
If they don't try and throw, you'll get a low jab

If you can make this a habit and stop whiffing throws, you will be decreasing the damage you take over the longrun which will lead to you winning more games simply because you had more life.

Using one finger to throw and tech throws

This is something I don't think I've seen a lot of people do aside from myself and I think it's paid off so far. I throw and tech throws a little different from other people in that I only use one finger to press LP + LK. Other players use their index and middle fingers, but I cross my index finger over my middle finger, raise my ring finger and pinky so that they don't hit the other buttons and then use only my middle figner to throw and tech. I believe this is why a lot of players over the years have complained that they are teching my throws but for some reason it's not working.

I believe that when you throw with two fingers like most people, not only is there more room for error, but you aren't pressing the buttons together as fast a I am, therefore my throw comes out first. The difference is a fraction of a second, but I believe it makes a difference. This is all 100% speculation on my part, but it makes sense to me. If you try my way of teching throws, see if you notice a difference in the number of throws you get off as well as tech.

That's about it for this part of the series. As I come up with other tweaks, I will be writing more articles in the future, so stay tuned for those. Until then, try making these small changes and you'll see that it makes a difference. Just keep in mind that although the advantages gained are small in short run, over the long haul these tweaks will make you a stronger player overall.

Warhammer Online add ons and macros are a great system that was developed to enhance a player's usability. With add ons and mods they can customize their entire interface just the way they like it. It can even add additional features that EA Mythic did not create. A player can customize their user interface to their own preference.

Warhammer Online add ons are often mistaken as hacks and cheats but they are actually not. They are actually fully supported by the publishers. EA Mythic created an API system which allows for players to build add ons. A player with some knowledge of programming can easily create their own add on and customize all of their user interface as well as other parts of the game. Even without any knowledge of the API or programming, a player can still easily take advantage of add ons already created and use them like they were their own.

To install an add on you've downloaded, all you simply need to do is navigate to your Warhammer folder which by default is located at C:program filesElectronic ArtsWarhammer. Once there you may need to create an interface folder followed by an add on s folder inside the interface folder. If these directories are already created then you do not need to worry. The add on files you've downloaded are usually in a zip or rar format. If this is the case, you'll need to download Winzip or Winrar to extract the original files. Once that is done, just copy your add on you've downloaded into your add on s folder.

Once you start the game your add on s will be active. Beware when downloading an add on that requires you to run the file. There is never an add on in .exe format. These are usually viruses and Trojans used to steal your Warhammer Online account and password. Also note that some add on s may be out of date due patches released by EA Mythic. Why Do Mom's Like Boffing?

My teenage son is active in boffing. Actually, my whole family are boffers! And often I am asked why a mother such as myself would encourage family members of all ages to continue participating in such an exercise.

Actually, it is simple.

It keeps a family together. Our whole family loves boffing. Yep, starting with what some would call "oldsters" like my husband and myself all the way down the line to our 10 year old, we all enjoy boffing! Even when our oldest comes over, she will not hesitate to grab up a boffer and go for it. (yes, its still an outdoor thing, not in the house please) But please never be too old to smile and laugh.

Stimulates Imagination. With boffers, you can be king of the hill, or fighting off a dragon and rescuing a prince (not going to find me waiting to be rescued), or taking on a pirate captain like Davey Jones. There is no limit to what you can imagine and I like that in a game.

It's not a video game. You don't need to have other stuff to use it and it get folks up off the couch.

There is no age limit! While it might be tougher for a small one to hold a boffer, I can play with a four or sixty year old. And no, you are never too old to play. When we go to SCA events, you see a wide range of ages that engage in boffing. You are also very likely to see entire family's there all together. And a tight knit family ranks high in my books!

It's Safe! You know if you ever had brothers and sisters growing up at some point you got into whatever it was they were doing. Well, sometimes kids don't take into consideration that older siblings or friends may not be fighting as hard as they seem. And older siblings are more likely to be careful where they hit. I like the fact that this is safer than the sticks and broom handles I used for swords as a kid. Especially using the SoftSwords that my son makes!

I'm not channeling my mother, Yeah I loved my mom, but everyone can remember something their parents said that to this day (whether its true or not) that makes them cringe. And among the phrases I can so remember my mother (truthfully speaking sometimes it was someone else's mother) screaming at my friends and myself were the following; "Stop that this instant!" "Your going to take someone's eye out if you keep that up!" or my favorite "It's all fun and games till I have to take someone to the hospital" (That one was true and Tommy Morris where ever you are I still cringe when I think about how I nailed you with that baseball bat when you didn't believe everyone when they said "Don't stand there man she throws the bat" Sorry). With boffing, I never have that worry!

Size is not always an advantage. When I was growing up, I had two older brothers who did not hesitate to use me as a punching bag. Yeah my parents would threaten to punish me if I didn't rat out my brothers, but my brothers always threatened to pound me if I did. So either way I went it was going to be no fun, So if I had boffers back then, maybe my child hood would have been less painful. I think it's great that you can be smaller than someone and still take them out. The bigger person may have the reach but one of my favorite shots is going for the knees and I don't have to bend down to get there.

You don't need a caravan to transport equipment! Boffers go almost anywhere. It is easy to fit them into a full car when we go camping or just about anywhere we go. We take them to the lake and buy foam squishey water balls and play water baseball. We take boffers on picnics and to the park. We never hesitate to share when we see someone watching us boff. We even take and carry them with us to local festivals when we think there might be other like minded folks.

But my favorite reason is: People smile when they boff. It's not something they even know they are doing. It may not start as a smiling thing for some folks, but if you hand someone a boffer and they forget their surroundings and start going for it the smile will come through every time. And as a mom and a person I think smiles count for a lot.

So as a mother, there isn't just one thing I like about boffing. But as you can see, there is a lot about boffing that is there to like and enjoy for the whole family. I would love to hear your thoughts.

And in that case, what creates a good game?

In an effort to figure out just what exactly draws people into a game I've done a lot of reading online about online RPGs, MMOs, etc to hopefully impact Ashianae's Journey in a positive way. There is an incredible article at Gamesutra.com called "Rethinking the MMO" which can be found here - the article is good and provides some insight on features and concepts needed in order to successfully pull off an MMO. While the article includes a great deal of information for someone willing to read a bit, the most important aspect mentioned in the article is game play that is fun. That's to say, one of the biggest game killers in game development can be "boring game play". This leads to the question of "How do you make your game fun?" It's a question that plagues me consistently, because while I can envision our game being fun, and including elements that tend to make games fun.. how can you be sure that your concept will lead to "fun" game play, and keep people engaged?

Two consistent answers seem pretty apparent in creating fun game play: an environment which is rich and full of depth, and an environment where "things" are happening. The second one may sound too easy to hold any water, but in fact is perhaps more important than the first. Depth is an important aspect of the game, but when even an encyclopedia contains said depth, it won't be enough to make the game play interesting and fun (unless of course you just enjoy reading an encyclopedia through).

The aspect of making "things" happen, and making them happen frequently however is something that consistently seems to keep players entertained... and if you've established some depth in your game, then you should theoretically have all the more fire power to make some worth while game play and activities. In the game that we first began, and continue to work on here and there when there is time is a prime example of the above condition. AWRPG (the title of the server in Active Worlds) and Draeda (the name of the game) contain mind boggling depth which includes pages and pages of developer written contain, and books full of player written history and events. However, while this depth is something that makes game play very rich, the game clearly slumps when few "things" go on, on a game wide scale. From what we've seen in the four years of running it, more activity equals more players, more interaction, and more fun.

In fact this can be seen in most of the virtual environments I've ever encountered, whether they're full blown games or not. Active Worlds itself (www.activeworlds.com) is experiencing an all time low in number of paying accounts online at one time partly due to a decrease in activity in the environment (at least, that's my argument). In all cases, you can typically trace number of active users to the amount of events going on at any given time and in turn the excitement generated by said events. So the answer seems simple - make more events, make more "things" happen. Unfortunately this is easier said than done. In fact, even in large scale games like EVE Online that appeal to thousands of players at one time, I often find myself bored and lacking *something* to do, even in an environment so deep that I can literally do anything I want. In many cases it seems that *something* does not grab me, and force me to interact in an engaging way. So the question becomes, what *things* have you seen and been a part of in online games that have made them fun, engaging, and something you didn't want to log off of? Dig deep and see what you come up with. For Active Worlds, many of those events were things like the AW version of survivor, community awards, building competitions, social gatherings, etc. In our game AWRPG, much of those events were world wide storyline events that grabbed people and compelled them to become involved.

How to Join Second Life

So you would like to join Second Life and see what all the fuss is about. It is actually free and easy to join. I will explain here exactly how to join step by step, just follow these simple instructions and you will be on your way to an amazing virtual world.

First you will need to meet these requirements in order to play Second Life. The current minimum requirements are a high speed internet connection such as DSL or Cable.

For Windows systems you need 2000, XP, or Vista, a processor at least 800 MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better, 512 MB or more memory, an NVIDIA GeForce 2, GeForce 4 MX or better OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250 or better OR Intel 945 chipset graphics card, and the latest drivers.

For Mac systems you will need Mac OS X 10.4.11 or better, 1 GHz G4 or better processor, 512 MB or more memory, ATI Radeon 9200 and above OR ATI Radeon X Series OR NVIDIA GeForce 2, GeForce 4 OR NVIDIA GeForce 5000 Series and above graphics card.

For Linux a reasonably modern 32-bit Linux environment is required. If you are running a 64-bit Linux distribution then you will need its 32-bit compatibility environment installed, 800 MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better processor, 512MB or more memory, and an NVIDIA GeForce 2, GeForce 4 MX, or better OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better graphics card.

Next go to the official Second Life website and click on the Join link. You will be presented with an option of areas to start in. Read through them and choose which one you prefer. Many of these areas have free items set up as gifts for new players. You will also find tutorials to help you learn how Second Life works when you are able to log in.

When creating your account you will be presented with your choice of first names and pre-set last names. Make your name good, this is how you will be known in Second Life. You will also provide your email address. This should be a valid email address that you have access to, not a fake one. Remember to save or write your name and password down so you do not forget them, but do not ever share them with anyone! Not even with someone claiming to work with Second Life, they do not need passwords!

Next simply download and install Second Life to your computer. The installation should prompt you as needed. Once Second Life is downloaded and installed you will see an icon of a hand on your desktop this is how you log in. Double-click on it to load SL.

Then enter your avatar's first name and the last name you choose when signing up, your password which is case sensitive, and hit connect. You can also save your password by checking the "Remember Password" box. You may not want to save your password if your in an office, or if your children or other family members access your computer.

So that is all there is to it! Enjoy your Second Life and remember that there are so many possibilities in such an open and sculptable world.

With your group you will go adventuring ,(usually in parks) earning money and experience, by killing monsters and completing quests and missions. These groups are normally storey oriented. N.E.R.O is considered a L.A.R.P and so is Belegarth.

Boffer groups

Boffer groups are more simplistic and battle oriented. These groups are the kind of groups that go out to a park or a large aback yard and can start playing with very little set up.

These are the types of fun games where your high off adrenalin and could keep fighting from dusk till dawn. The weapons in these groups are always different. The speck on there weapons, can be very different from group to group because in most cases they ether make up there own rules or borrow them from other groups. These groups are a lot of fun and can be started with only a few boffers and a couple of friends.

Reenacting groups

Reenactment groups are like the people you would see at a Renaissance Fair. These people are sticklers for there authenticity. Reenactment groups are also battle oriented group and are usually better connected to each other having kingdoms and more widely followed rules then, plain boffer groups. These groups also have to register to join a kingdom, before they are considered a actual group. Some times these groups will don home made plate armor and use rattan (hard solid bamboo) swords and other weapons. These would be groups like the S.C.A and Belegarth.

So now that we've talked about some of the types of boffer groups, you can now decide witch type of group you would like to join. Start by looking at colleges near you. They are almost always great places to find boffer groups. It may take you some time looking and finding a group that is right for your interests.

If you look and ask around you can usually find some one who knows what your asking about. Another great way to find a group is to actually ask some of your friends if they already boff. Believe me, they are always looking for more people that want to join and play. If all else fails then go to Google or Yahoo or what ever your favorite search engine is and look for boffer group in (your area) and you will usually get a couple of good hits and a lot of information. Craig's List is also a great way to meet and find groups. You can usually find some one who knows about reenactment groups at local renaissance fairs as well.

Don't let the fact that there isn't currently a group in your area be a deterrent! If all else fails, you also you can take matters into your own hands. You can get a bunch of your friends together and depending on what type of group you want to make, create your own group. If it's just a boffing group, you could actually try and get your school to start one. If you already know of a L.A.R.P, you can find ways of making groups with them. Or you can start your own L.A.R.P group, with your own races, and stories.

Most of the advanced role playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons or the Marvel Super Heroes Role-Playing Game require the use of one person to act as an arbitrator in the game, someone to help set up the adventure, keep everything running smoothly on track, and to handle all of the threads that each player or character might be involved in. The Game Master will be one who helps the players with keeping track of all of the rules of the game along with moderating the players so that chaos does not take over the game.

The Game Master usually prepares for the game before the players actually arrive to play. The GM will decide on the adventure and the state of the world at the time of play as well as any major events which might take place during the quest of the day. They will prepare themselves for the quest by familiarizing themselves with special traits of all of the characters who will be participating in the night's quest. The GM will take special notes on anything they may need to keep in mind for the quest at hand so that, at a quick reference, they can figure out any problem areas that may arise during the game.

A good Game or Dungeon Master is someone who will will use strong storytelling skills to paint the characters, conditions, and events in the world that the players find themselves in. When the players have an opportunity to act out their adventures in a world which is rich with colorful supporting characters, fraught with action and thrilling events, and full of mystery, they will enjoy themselves much more than with a boring Game Master. Indeed, the Game Master themselves will have more opportunity to enjoy themselves as, the more they have to work with, the more opportunities can arise to surprise both them and the players of the game.

A great Game Master will need to have a number of skills at their disposal, however. A quick mind is needed to keep track of all the threads that a game might have at any given moment. With a number of different characters and scenarios being acted out, it can take a great deal of effort to make sure that none of the story lines get confused. Quick wits are also important because one needs to be able to react well to anything that a player presents which may be surprising. Anyone can simply throw another enemy in the path to be fought, but a great Game Master will try to see what the players might choose to do and to be a few steps ahead of them in the story line which is building up. Finally, and this goes without saying, but a great Game Master will have a strong imagination, being able to present a detailed world in every possible aspect.

I was reading through some of the texts of the Art of War by Sun Tzu and considered how some of the doctrines he wrote down applied to the current video gamer while playing some of the strategy war games which are now in fashion. I thought I would have a look at some of his texts and see whether they applied to the logic of the computer.

Sun Tzu is believed to have lived from around 544 BC to 496 BC, although there is still a lot of speculation as to these dates. Skilled in warfare matters he wrote The Art of War, the principals of which still hold true many centuries later.

I don't intend to take every one of his ideas and discuss them as that would become a book in its own right, rather I will just pick some of the more meaningful.

"All warfare is based on deception."

This is and always has been true, however if you were playing against a computer I doubt whether you would be able to deceive it. In general the software either reacts to your movements or has a reasonable predetermined plan which it follows, hence the reason why very often mass attacks don't occur until you reach a point within the map. Multiplayer against a human opponent would of course allow all types of deception, drawing another player into a well conceived trap.

"Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near."

Again the computer would be hard to fool in this respect; however it is generally possible into fooling the computer into starting its predetermined plan. Assault his base with all your forces and you will normally be overwhelmed, to be followed by a devastating attack on your base. But if you attack with a smaller scouting force, whilst keep your main force in reserve in more favourable conditions, once his attack starts you should withdraw pulling him into your trap.

"Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him."

This follows on from the previous point, use your faster scouts to draw out his forces and pick them off individually rather than going in for a slogging match. Even better if you can draw them into some of your strongpoints.

"If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him."

It will be likely that the computer has already got a secure base and defended points. This usually allows the computer to start attacks from early on in the game. So build your base and be prepared to defend before you go and look for trouble. Don't stray too far into the map as you are sure to trigger a fatal attack.

"If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant."

This is just not going to work for a computer opponent, if nothing else they have no emotions and more often than not I think it is us that get irritated by computers.

"If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them."

Computer opponents usually have set attack plans, if you manage to repel the attack and you have enough in reserve then go after him, at this point he is probably weakest. Attack from two sides and try to split his force, if you can draw them into set positions all the better.

"Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected."

The computer is never really unprepared, but again his set plans will mean he defends set points on the map, so rather than going straight in try to get round his position and attack from the side or rear.

"These military devices, leading to victory, must not be divulged beforehand. "

I just assume you won't tell the computer what you are going to do and it is unlikely it would act on it even if you could.

Imagination - The old argument is that there is no need to use imagination in television, videos, or gaming. Untrue! Where else can you imagine yourself to be a strong, rugged barbarian or a wizard with incredible powers? Imagination needs a place to start and what better place than the awesome imagery and unique scenarios available in a video game? Of course you could always stare at a stack of blocks and see what comes to mind.

Exploration - Video role-playing games encourage the player to stray off the beaten path, take a chance and open the door, not knowing what may be lurking behind it and interact with other characters. It is not just a suggestion but a requirement that players gather up their courage and explore the unknown.

Memorization - The worlds depicted in video games can be vast and accessing maps and other help can disrupt not only the game but a player's concentration as well. To avoid this gamers will automatically memorize new terrain and remember which tasks must be completed to reach a certain goal.

Consequences - All games, whether computer or video, operate on a 'action/reaction' principle. Do action A and reaction B will happen. This is a great opportunity for both gamers and programmers to learn about the consequences of their actions.

Patience, Dedication, Endurance - Very few games can be finished in a day and if you can finish them that soon most people feel cheated. In fact, some of the most popular games take weeks or even months to finish.

Wii Fit, The Balance Board and Its Role in Physical Therapy

There is no doubt that the Wii Fit has becoming something of a gaming phenomenon. In fact it has become completely synonymous with the Wii console itself, a kind of flagship title which rivals Microsoft and Sony can only gaze upon in envy.

This across the board appeal has been well documented elsewhere, yet one area which is still in its infancy is the idea of Wii Fit being used as a serious tool in the medical sphere.
The game is starting to find fans in hospitals, old people's homes and physiotherapy units across the world and both patients and staff alike are starting to see the benefits.

22 year old Nathan Ellis from Lancashire, England suffered horrific injuries to his limbs when he was unfortunately hit by a car. Thankfully he survived, and as a 12 month stretch of physiotherapy loomed Nathan suggested that using Wii Fit as opposed to traditional methods of physiotherapy may provide the necessary fun factor which would help him get through the long and occasionally painful treatment sessions.

The idea was a deemed a great success and resulted in both the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals in the North West of England introducing Wii Fit as a legitimate tool to assist their younger patients requiring physiotherapy.

Lesley Walters, the head of physiotherapy at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, recognised that by adopting play or diversion techniques you can assist children to overcome discomfort and stiffness whilst undergoing physical therapy.

At the other end of the age spectrum, the elderly have also discovered Wii Fit provides a great activity with some residents deciding that knitting and bridge are out and Wii Fit and the Balance Board are in.
Some staff members at the WilMed Nursing Home in Milwaukee USA had the game at home, and decided that some of their residents may enjoy it. They were right.

It proved to be a big hit with residents even up to the age of 84, with resident Everlyn Dawson getting out of her wheelchair to try her hand at bowling. Although she initially got a nothing more than a 'gutter ball' she smiled and with determination said "I hope I am getting better at bowling, it's certainly a lot of fun. It's nice and I look forward to doing it.'

And it's not just the gaming scores which are seeing improvement, Susan Swain, the in house physical therapy assistant, feels that an improvement in hand eye co-ordination is noticeable too, and most importantly, there are a lot more smiles too.

So far we have looked at two examples of how the Wii Fit can be of use in two separate environments which are at opposite ends of the age spectrum. Finally it is worth adding that Wii Fit is also being adopted as a method of physio therapy for athletes in recovery from a variety of sports related injuries.

Sue Stanley-Green, a professor of athletic training at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, told Reuters Health, 'We are looking to incorporate Wii Fit into the athletic training room as far as rehabilitation, for example, on post-operative knees and ankles.' It is the fun aspect of Wii Fit which makes the game so attractive for this purpose, with many people finding it takes the repetition and monotony away from such exercises

These three areas have all utilised Nintendo's Wii Fit either as a means to provide fun and entertainment for the elderly, a method of distraction for youngsters undergoing sometimes painful physiotherapy , or athletes who find repetitive exercises easier to swallow when then they are coated in the fun guise of the Wii Fit.

Whatever you think of the Wii Fit, it's surely going to be a long time before another game will have both the same level of appeal and functionality.

The Xbox 360 - If You're Buying a Games Console This Christmas Look No Further

I like to think that I'm a nice guy but I'm getting a bit tired of PS3 types trying to justify throwing away their cash on a load of features that for my money don't matter. I firmly believe that a gaming console is for gaming, why is so important all of a sudden for a games console to do everything aside from the washing up?

If you want a console for gaming and gaming alone then the Xbox 360 is as good (if not better) than the PS3 and can be bought at a fraction of the price. I guess the point of this article is to go through some of the standard objections levelled at the Xbox 360 and give my take on it.

Firstly the 'Three Rings of Death'

OK, I accept that this has been a bit of an embarrassment for fans of the console but the situation has improved over the past year, possibly due to the Falcon chip which reduced the consoles heat output during use.

'The PS3 has the all conquering Blu Ray Player and the Xbox doesn't.'

I think that this is just another load of hype which detracts from the main purpose of the console which is GAMING! If I really wanted to watch a Blu - Ray movie then I'll get a separate player when they come down in price, at the moment DVD's suit me just fine, in fact I propose that they suited everybody just fine until they were told otherwise. I bet Blu Ray won't last long as a format anyway, as it won't be long before we will be streaming movies direct to our consoles and if you just bought your favourite films in the Blu Ray format, you'll have to buy them all over again.

'The large Xbox Power Brick'

Yeah, it's a bit on the big side but then again it's not enough to make me not buy the console.

'The recent Xbox price cuts'

Some critics would have you believe that the recent price cuts which apply across the Xbox range are a desperate move by Microsoft. I simply don't agree, it's an older console and the price cuts have come at the right time. Rather than being a desperate move I'd suggest it's an attempt to get the final swathe of 'undecided's' onboard with Xbox rather than see them buy a Wii or PS3.

That's the so -called negatives dealt with so now let's move on to the positives, the plus points for me include the consoles superior controller; the game selection which is still better for the Xbox than the PS3 (although I'll admit they've been a bit lax of late) and despite being a bit of a Wii rip off the upcoming dashboard upgrade looks great too.

The PS3 IS a great console, but I think the current price is way too high - Blu Ray won't be a big pull for much longer, and all the other stuff I'm not really bothered about. I've got an IPod and dock for music, laptop for computer stuff, TV and DVD for films and a Xbox for gaming. I'm just not sold on a console trying to be all things to all people.

R4 to Be Surprise Christmas Hit?

As usual at Christmas, there is a lot of talk about what will be this year's must have toy. Toys such as Elmo Live by Fisher-Price are, as you would expect in many experts prediction list. This year however, the crown of most wanted toy may not go to any of the well established multi-nationals. Instead this year the most wanted Christmas present may be the intruding R4 for Nintendo DS.

R4 unlocks the ability for a DS to read from an SD card. This opens up a whole load of possibilities. One of these is that the Nintendo DS will now be compatible with homebrew applications which can be stored on the SD and inserted into the R4.

Since the R4 gives its users so much potential to use their DS in lots of new ways, it has been seen creeping up the Amazon best sellers lists. Although it will probably not be on the news as the best selling toy of Christmas as it is not stock in high street stores yet, it could be facing stock problems like all the best toys.

An example of the type of application available for the R4 is DSOrganize. This piece of software allows you use your DS as a basic office suite. It includes a file browser, web browser, text editor, image editor, calculator, calendar, contact list amongst other useful features.

Moonshell is an operating system for the R4 which lets you browse homebrew applications as well as integrating an MP3 player, video and photo viewer. There are several operating systems available but Moonshell is the most popular.

The R4 even lets people stay in touch with their friends and family. Homebrew applications allow users to connect to their MSN, AIM or yahoo messenger. Most interestingly of all, Skype can also be used with the R4. This means that a DS can pretty much be used as a mobile phone as long as a Wi-Fi connection is available.

DSLibris enables the DS to display ebooks, turning the machine into a small library of books for you to read at your pleasure. DSVNC can be used to control a PC. DS Boro is a web browser. The list of new ways to use a DS with an R4 goes on.

Nintendo really missed a lot of potential for the DS originally by not including a flash drive as the PSP has. The R4 has fix that problem but Nintendo are keen for to have people use their own device for reading flash card, so they have introduced a new model of DS, the DSi.

The primary reason for the flash reader in the DSi is to store photos taken on the DSi's new cameras and music files. It seems unlikely that Nintendo will allow homebrew applications to be ran through the DSi without an R4 as Nintendo have a history of strict control over what is released on their systems.

Nintendo's strict controls possibly steam from the early 80s when the video game market was in decline due to a large amount of poor quality games which flooded the market. In response to this, the Nintendo Entertainment System was the first console to include a chip which prevented games being manufactured without Nintendo's approval.

This however took away from consumer choice. The R4 brings this choice back.

PS3 VS XBOX 360 - Why the PS3 Comes Out on Top

As you are no doubt aware there are 3 main contenders this year PS3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii.

Let's leave the Wii out of this for the time being (it's not quite in direct competition with the Xbox and PS3 as it offers an innovative family friendly 'phenomenon' rather than a hardcore 'Hi Res ' gaming console), so if you accept my premise then we are left with a straight shootout between the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

With so much hoopla surrounding both consoles it can be a little confusing to know which console to buy. Both provide an excellent platform for gaming, in fact when you look at the graphics comparisons there is very little to choose between the two but when you look a little deeper that's when in my opinion the PS3 comes out on top.

Both have recently received price cuts (Xbox) or modifications (PS3 memory upgrade), the Xbox 360 has a new dashboard all ready to launch whilst PS3 has its Home service all primed and ready to go,so why choose the PS3?

Call me old fashioned but the horrible appendage that is the Xbox 360's power brick is still a real turn off, it looks like the device which the Ghostbusters use to store trapped apparitions, I understand it was required to make the Xbox console itself look a lot more appealing (which it does) but it's still an unsightly chunk of hardware.OK, that's a purely aesthetic reason so let's move on to more pressing issues, and Blu Ray is one of the biggies.

Not only is Blu-Ray shaping up to be the future of home movie entertainment, the discs themselves can store an incredible amount of information giving game developers enough scope to really push the boat out. The Xbox's support of HD DVD and not Blu Ray has turned out to be a massive mistake and either way you have to buy an external hard drive to play the discs. Some reports state that HD DVD's main backer Toshiba is no longer producing the drives. Oops.

Current rumours suggest that a future Xbox will have a Blu Ray drive or the capacity to hook up to an external Blu Ray player, but once again just like when they tried to sort out those Red Rings of Death it's too little too late, the PS3 is already there and the Xbox is just playing catch up.

Did someone mention red rings? So far the PS3 has not been the recipient of any major hardware issues, the same cannot be said about the Xbox 360, the dreaded three rings of death follow this console around like a digital Ebola virus, I am fully aware of the Falcon chipset and that Microsoft offer a good repairs service which is both fast and efficient but no amount of customer care or three year warranty is going to alter the perception that the Xbox 360 is a less than reliable piece of hardware. It doesn't even matter if is true or not, it's 'out there', and like most things the myth always beats the truth.

You may think that this is all a load of pro PS3 mumbo jumbo, if that is the case then take a look at YouTube, it is still receiving a significant amount of videos either offering ham fisted home repair tips or poking fun at the consoles three lights, they can't ALL be planted by Sony (can they?) Whatever the truth is - It just doesn't look good.

Another feature which falls into the category "Why didn't we think of that?" is the small detail of the PlayStation Network costing nothing to use, it gives the PS3 user a vast amount of downloadable content and on line features for nothing, whilst the popular Xbox Live service still costs you a yearly subscription, if Microsoft just bit the bullet and made this service free it would surely blow a massive dent into the PS3's popularity. C'mon nobody expects to pay for anything in the digital age throw us a bone Microsoft!

Finally there is the price cut itself, and whilst it may be unfair to slam the Xbox for presenting us with a very capable console for not much money I still can't help but think that there is something a little desperate about dropping the price and aside from that it's little bit of a red herring too.

The Xbox 360 Arcade is the console which carries the blockbuster $199.99/£150.00 price tag BUT by the time you've paid for all the add ons which allow the console to be taken seriously (hard drive, Xbox live subscription etc) it's not quite the bargain a first time buyer may feel they were getting.

That said Microsoft has enjoyed a massive increase in sales since the price cut so what do I know?The Blu Ray mis-step, the three rings fiasco, the online service that you have to pay for...it's all money in the bank for Sony and issues that need to be addressed once and for all by Microsoft.

As Christmas approaches we can all sit back and let battle commence, competition of this nature is all good from a consumers point of view and despite everything I believe the Xbox 360's price cuts may produce some credit crunch related results for Microsoft but for me if you've got the money it's got to be a PS3... for this Christmas at least.

The Wii Fit is taking the nation by storm with its new brand of fun exercise gaming that keeps you fit as well as entertained. But is it all as good as it sounds? For those who misuse it, the Wii Fit brings with it injuries and falls as well as games. Repetitive motion injuries are one of the leading emergency room situations these days. Always take a break after 20 minutes or so of doing the same motion over and over, or you could end up in an ER too.

There's really no reason for anything bad to occur while playing with a Wii Fit, as long as you follow these easy safety guidelines. Before long they'll be second nature to do, just like the original Wii remote became second nature to point and use. And once you've adapted to your new balance board the right way, it will serve you with fun and fitness for years to come.

When I was a child there was nothing more frustrating than playing a level over and over only to constantly be defeated by a labyrinth, enemy or puzzle that was beyond my skill level. In either of the two instances, interest in the game would diminish and gamers would be without games until they accumulated appropriate wealth or the next gift giving event in their life occurred.

Then came the onset of game cheats and all those old games would once again become fun new games. Cheats started appearing in gaming magazines such as Gamepro in the late 80s and would later be spread in the playgrounds of local schools. Eating out on a live action Role Playing Event, a catering guide for Larping. No matter what the duration of the event you are going to you will no doubt need to eat and drink. Here are the different options that players tend to choose when going on a live action role playing weekend and a few thoughts on each.

Fasting

'It is only a two days larping; I don't need to eat a real meal.' This type of live action role player will usually stop at a garage or small shop on their way to the event and buy a bag of already made sandwiches crisps pasties and chocolate. This works well for players who for whatever reason cannot find the time to sort out food in advance of the event. However a live action role playing event is usually strenuous and can often go on late into the night. Not eating properly even for a few days can affect your sleep patterns your health and therefore your enjoyment of the larping weekend event.

Fast food

Some of the larger live action role playing events have burger vans and other catering facilities similar to what you might find at a music festival. Some people when going larping find that it takes enough time just to organise their kit and to be able to buy all your food on site leaves more time for the gaming itself. The disadvantage here is that in most cases fast food is far from healthy, plus queues and delays may mean that you miss out on the adventure that you are paying to do. Also money can be an issue for many people who go larping and the on site prices can be quite high.

The player who has everything

In every club and at every event there are people who just bring everything with them when they go larping; including the kitchen sink. These people can put together a full English breakfast or even a three course meal from their tent or back of their car. The main advantage to this approach is that you can eat well on a live action role playing event with only a low budget. The main disadvantages are the car space needed which may mean leaving in character equipment behind and also the time it takes to cook and clean up when you could be taking part in the activities that you have paid for.

Catering an event as a group

This is a popular approach taken by many people nowadays when going away larping. You get a group of people who are all going live action role playing together and everyone brings different items to feed everyone in the group for a number of meals. This can prove to be a relatively low cost option and can mean you only help with one meal but eat on many. This does take some organising however and like in every walk of life not everyone in the hobby is capable of doing this well and people can eat quite upset if there is no milk for their tea etc.

Catering by the organisers of the event.

This is probably the best option when on an event. Leave it to the people running the event who are more likely to have hired professionals and will provide a healthy filling range of food at a reasonable price. Many of the larger events throughout the uk will now offer a catering option, if in doubt contact them and see what is available.
